Sorrento, Pompeii and Naples

So this weekend got off to a eventful start.... I was awoken by my cell phone ring at 7:35am. On the other line my friend was asking me if I had made it to school by 7:30 to get on the bus for our school trip to Assisi. Of course I hadn't so I was pretty panicked. It was a bummer that I missed the trip but I still had plans to go to the south of Italy for the weekend and luckily one of the girls form our group was skipping the Assisi trip and heading straight to Sorrento so I caught up with her and we took the train together in the morning.

Sorrento was beautiful! It's right on the coast abotu 30 minutes south of Naples. All the buildings look like they are about to fall into the ocean they are so close to the edge of the cliffs and they're are hoards of tourists form SCottland and England. Sorrento is known for its Lemons so I got some lemon chocolate and tried limoncello.

The first night we sat at this beautiful outdoor restaurant and looked out onto the ocean while eating gelato. It was probably one of the most beautiful views I have ever seen! THen on Saturday we took a short trian ride to Pompeii! It was so interesting! I had been looking forward to seeing it for so long. It was amazing to hear about Roman life and see how preserved these ruins were after 2000 years! I was especailly astounded by the fact that the people of the town did not cook for themsevels but instead went to the equivalent of fast food joints to eat daily! Ill be sure to upload pictures soon!

Sunday was a lazy day at the beach in the morning but then on the way back up to Florence we stopped in Naples to have a look around. I still can't decide if I think it was pretty or ugly. Most of the buildings are old, decrepit and covered in graffiti but there is something truly Italian about the multicolored paint and hanging clothes that adorn the highrise apartments. I was able to get a tasty piece of pizza and walk around but I'm content to never see Naples again. One hour was enough to get a taste for neapolotin life.

Another eventful weekend! Maybe it was too much fun though because now Im getting sick :-( My parents are in Flroence for a few days so I'll get to see them tonight or tomorrow. Hope you are doing well. Email me and give me an update! mmcampion@gmail.com
